Charity Coffee Morning – Saturday 26th May

Please come and support a Coffee Morning at 27 Oakwood, 1030 till 1230, Saturday 26th May, all in aid of Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s only disability charity for children and their families.

Amongst other things, they run holiday play schemes which Annette Craddock’s family and many others make a lot of use of.

This is the third Coffee Morning Annette has held for them as part of their annual Cake Bake campaign, but this time she has decided to hold it on a Saturday when hopefully more people will come.

There’ll be lots of home made cakes and a raffle.

Please come and support them. Thank you.

Road Closures – Dorchester Marathon Sunday 27th May

Dorchester Casterbridge Rotary Club, in conjunction with White Star Running is holding the annual Dorchester Marathon and Casterbridge Half Marathon, taking in Dorchester Town Centre and the surrounding villages on Sunday 27th May 2018.

Most of the route is through the Frome valley and road closures and alternative routes will mainly affect roads to the north of Broadmayne but the centre of Dorchester will be closed from 7am to 10am and some routes till 3pm. See a detailed list below.

Here is a message from the organisers:

This is a community event, organised by local people for the benefit of our local Air Ambulance, local charities and good causes, and our own charity work. The event is supported by Dorchester, West Dorset and Dorset Councils, together with the local business community as it will bring competitors and their families to Dorchester for the weekend and doubtless inspire them to return to glorious West Dorset on many future occasions!

The reason for contacting you is one of courtesy and to provide you with advance notice of road closures and parking restrictions. The marathon race will start early (8.30am) on Sunday morning at Cokers Frome farm (the site of Dorset County Show) and continue via London Road, Top of Town, Cornwall Road and South Walks, all of which will be closed for about an hour and then open once the race has passed. The half marathon will start on Grey’s Bridge at 9.30am and pass along Kings Road which will also be closed for about half an hour and then open as normal. Both races will cross the bypass at the Allington Avenue bridge, head towards West Stafford and then out into the Frome valley, returning to Cokers Frome Farm southwards along Slayers Lane, which will be closed for much of the day.

The event organisers in association with Dorset County Council have made every effort to minimise the disruptive impact of the event and to allow those directly affected to carry on with their lives with as little inconvenience as possible. Details of road closures are enclosed, together with alternative routes which are intended to limit the impact on local residents wherever possible. Please take note of the information provided and rest assure that every effort will be made to keep traffic flowing as freely and smoothly as possible, whilst ensuring the safety of the runners and marshals.

Namvula and band – 19th May

A “not to be missed” musical experience comes to Broadmayne Village Hall on the 19th May 7:30pm

NAMVULA AND BAND

Zambian-Scottish singer and songwriter Namvula has been described as “a true original” by the Guardian.

She creates an intrepid new world where folk and urban traditions of her Zambian homeland blend with London’s vibrant eclectic music scene.

Namvula has collaborated and shared the stage with artists including legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, sitarist Anoushka Shankar, and local Zambian singing legend Maureen Leland.

Her debut album Shiwezwa was released in 2014 to critical acclaim, and was selected as one of the top 100 albums of 2014 by The Sunday Times. The album release was followed by numerous radio and TV appearances, including the BBC’s Focus on Africa (TV and Radio), Jazz FM, BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, BBC Radio 3’s World on 3, and Zambian national TV and Radio, as well as repeat airplay on various stations including Late Junction and World Routes. With Namvula’s highly anticipated second album ‘Quiet Revelations’, the gifted song-sculptress digs deep in to her inspirations, exploring different aspects of female hood.

Backed by a stellar band of some of the UK’s most respected African and jazz musicians, including Mercury-nominated bassist Liran Donin and saxophonist Chris Williams, and percussionist Mamadou Sarr (Baaba Maal, Angelique Kiddo), this will be an unmissable night of outstanding musicianship and early booking is highly advised!

Tickets are £10 adults, £7 U18, £28 family and are available from The Corner House Stores, from Tim Clayton (07443 659912) or from Artsreach (artsreach.co.uk

A352 Closures and changes to the No 5 bus – April 2018

The A352 will be closed between Whitcombe and Broadmayne from the 26th April to the 4th May between 9:15 and 3:30pm.

The signed diversion will be via Warmwell, Osmington and Preston as the Highway authority have to divert traffic by using roads with a similar classification (in other words they can’t sign a diversion via West Knighton and the West Stafford by-pass or via Chalky Road and the Whitcombe stables).

Number 5 buses operating during the hours of closure will be re-routed and use the bus-stops on the opposite side of Knighton Lane to normal.

Buses will go into Dorchester at 10:17, 12:19 and 15:19 travelling UP Knighton Lane to West Knighton and then using the West Stafford by-pass (the 07:55 and the 17:38 will not be affected)

Buses leaving Dorchester at 10:35 and 13:35 will return through West Knighton travelling DOWN Knighton Lane (the 08:35, the 15:55 and the 17:55 will not be affected).
