Broadmayne and West Knighton

Women’s Institute

Broadmayne and West Knighton WI was formed in 1953 and has been going strong for sixty-five years. Meetings are held every second Thursday in the month at 7pm in the Village Hall except in August. The meetings last approximately two hours, with a speaker, refreshments, a business meeting and a social activity. Our speakers’ subjects include travel, history, literature, local issues, wildlife and food. The meetings give us all a chance to catch up with one another, and to exchange news and views.

Apart from getting together every month at our regular time, there are plenty more activities that we enjoy together. There is a Walking Group on the first Tuesday of the month at 10am. This walk organised by Wendy usually ends with lunch together at a café or restaurant. We also have a “Girls Night Out” – the term “Girls” is used loosely here! This is on the third Tuesday of the month and is organised by Leri. Restaurants we have visited previously are Cote and Carluccio’s in Dorchester, and various pubs around the area. In the summer, we have a Garden Group, visiting each other’s gardens. Here we are able to discuss our own gardening issues, or just admire someone with greener fingers than us. Tea and cake are usually served and once again we can chat. In the winter months, the Garden Group transforms itself into a Craft Group. We are not so desperate to garden in the winter and prefer the same refreshment idea in the warmth and comfort of someone’s house.

And as if that wasn’t enough – we usually have at least one outing a year. We have visited Forde Abbey, the RNLI Headquarters in Poole, and we have had a wonderful boat trip from Poole to Wareham with a fish and chip lunch. Cinema visits are popular and plans are always in hand for another outing. To keep the cost as low as possible, we car share, which means that there is always a lift available.

In August we have a summer Cream Tea and at Christmas we have a party – what else?
