Broadmayne has escaped much of the worst of the flooding that has affected areas around us recently. However, it might help you now or in the future to know that a guide to help with recovery from flooding has been produced by Flood Wessex and is available through this community website.

Although Wessex Water intended to complete the section of the work requiring total closure of the A353 on Friday, they have hit several problems and won’t be finished until Friday 30th January. We can expect the higher volume of traffic through the village to continue.

Here is a very full explanation of the problems encountered.

I’ve got an important update to share with you. As you will be aware, Wessex Water have been working on the A353 at Poxwell under a road closure. Unfortunately they have encountered some issues that have slowed progress and they will require a one week extension, with the closure now expected to remain in place until Friday 30th January 2026 to complete this section of their works.

The extension is required because Wessex Water originally planned to install the new water main using directional drilling, which worked well at the start of the closure. However further along the route the material of a nearby gas main changes from plastic to iron. Drilling close to iron mains is more sensitive and requires a larger safe working area. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough space available on site to carry this out safely, so the team had to switch to open cut excavation.

In another area where drilling was planned, the team also encountered very large boulders underground. These fell onto the drilling rods and prevented them from drilling any further, meaning this section also had to be excavated, which has added extra time to the works. As open cut excavation is now being used, the team must place a substantial amount of foam concrete into the trench as they progress. This process takes longer and once the concrete is poured, it needs time to set before the road can be reopened.

We are aware of the impact this closure has had on the wider road network and Wessex Water will be working over the weekend to ensure the works are completed as promptly as possible.

Broadmayne responded better than we ever expected, when we put out a call for help in the summer; a total of 18 people have come to the churchyard on Saturday mornings. Thank you all! More than 40 previously hidden graves have been uncovered, paths and edges have been tidied as well as extra touches, such as the flower pots by the benches. Positive comments have been received from those visiting graves and those using the public footpath..

We will be continuing in 2026, everyone Is welcome! Group work remains 10am-12 on the last Saturday of the month or if you would prefer to work alone or at a different time, please do get in touch. We look forward to achieving even more in this lovely space within our village. Happy new year everyone!
